Golf GPS Systems, Apps, and Watches

A question at least some beginner golfers have is whether they should use a golf GPS system, a laser rangefinder, or a smartphone app to determine the yardage of their next shot.

Laser rangefinder are not recommended to a beginner or high handicap golfer for a few reasons. First, they are hard to use if you do not have sight of the object you would like to determine the distance to, like the pin. Also, one of the goals of a high handicap golfer is to hit the green, and since laser rangefinders are telling you the distance to the pin, the tendency becomes to start seeking the pin and actually missing more greens.

Golf GPS Systems

Some golf GPS systems include sensors for your clubs, which connect to their app on your smartphone, allowing you to automatically track your shots and compile your stats.

Arccos Smart Sensors

The Arccos Caddie Smart Sensors package includes 14 sensors, one for every club in your club, along with access to the Arccos Caddie App.

Game Golf Pro

Game Golf Pro tracks every shot, yardage, and club hit, also giving you recommendations as you play.

Smartphone Apps

I use a smartphone app and recommend a smartphone app for many beginner golfers, provided the following conditions apply. You need to somehow effective carry your phone on the course with you. You also should not get text or call notifications on the course. Concentrate on your play and enjoy it!

TheGrint

TheGrint is a golf GPS, stat tracker, and USGA handicap smartphone app. The pro version also features advanced stats, live scoring, and entering scores through taking a picture of your scorecard.

Golf GPS Watches

A golf GPS watch would be a good choice if you like or even prefer to wear a watch. A golf GPS watch stylishly provides you the yardages to hazards, lay ups, and the front, center, and back of every green.

Garmin Approach S10

The Garmin Approach S10 is a lightweight GPS watch that displays yardages to the front, middle, and back of greens, along with hazards and doglegs, on over 41,000 preloaded courses. You can also keep score on the watch.
